Our values and the environment

Cober Hill is committed to minimising our impact on the environment in all aspects of our operations.

We aim:

  • To use energy and water as efficiently as possible and to reduce use
  • To investigate the use of renewable sources of energy
  • To use less, waste less and recycle more
  • To select and encourage our contractors and suppliers to share our values
  • To encourage our staff and guests to make positive environmental choices

Recent activity:

Energy

  • Heavy investment in energy efficient boiler plant. Our old boilers were estimated to be 54% efficient. The new condensing boilers are 93% efficient now
  • Zoning of the main building enabling selective shutdown as and when areas not in use
  • Installation of (5 x 20) solar panels which, conditions permitting, contribute to the generation of hot water
  • Use of low energy efficient light bulbs throughout. The cost to run a standard 60w light bulb is £37.44 P. A. The cost of an energy efficient replacement is £7.49 P. A.
  • Showers fitted to the majority of bedrooms; programme to be completed within one/two years. The ratio of water used bath/shower is 80/20

Catering

  • All purchases, wherever possible, locally sourced, in particular meat, fish, fruit and vegetables.
This is currently approximately 40% of our total food purchased
  • Packaging kept to a minimum
  • Food waste closely monitored
  • Strictly managed portion control
  • Coffee/tea fair trade products

Bedroom, laundry and cleaning products

  • Bed linen and towels only changed on guest departure, unless by specific request
  • Pillow cases and towels laundered on site. It is estimated that we save in the region of £24,000 laundering these items at Cober Hill
  • School children given one towel only
  • Toilet and hand towels, black refuse sacks and sanitizers are environmentally friendly

Recycling

  • As much of our paper, cardboard, plastic and tin as possible (we currently generate 4 x 1100 large blue recycling bins for collection per week). We now recycle 15 tons of waste annually, some 45% of our total waste
  • Kitchen waste oil is collected, under licence, for refining

Suggestions

We welcome suggestions for further reducing our impact on the environment from staff, guests and suppliers.

Monitoring
We intend to have our practices independently audited. An annual performance report will be presented to the board of Directors.
